New Experiences and Past Favorites at the Folk Arts Festival

From blacksmithing, beadwork, and beekeeping to puppetry and pyrography

Eau Claire, Wisconsin—The 14th Folk Arts Festival is happening at the Chippewa Valley Museums on February 24 from noon to 5 pm. The festival features a variety of family-friendly presentations, vintage skills, and musical performances.

Fun and New. Step outside for a live presentation by blacksmith Charles Lininger using his mobile forge, weather permitting. Learn about bee keeping, along with the art of making honey and candles, with Drew Kaiser from Kaiserson Bee Company. Visit with Deb Brown to explore the art of puppetry. Join Mickey Mueller to discover the techniques of pyrography (wood burning). Beadworker and jewelry maker Kindra Lockman will be demonstrating her techniques.

Kids. Kids will want to check out Patricia Hawkenson’s new Junior Edition of Color the Chippewa Valley. Eau Claire K Kids Club will be making fleece pillows which will be donated to the community for kids in need. Visit an instrument petting zoo with nyckelharpas.

More. And that is just the beginning. The Festival also features traditional toboggan making with Steve Vogelsang, embroidery and clothing repair with Jenna Vande Zande, and Fiber Friends with wool spinning, weaving and more. Eric Kayser and John Suppon discuss model railroading with their 1930s Eau Claire display. Festival favorites Chippewa Valley Woodturners Guild and West Wisconsin Wood Carving Guild will be back this year as well.

Music. The Ukelele Klub of Eau Claire and Garden Party will be performing. Bethany Shuda will be sharing folk harps and Earl Holzman will be presenting on building nyckelharpas with contemporary designs.

Education and Vendors. In addition to all the skills you learn throughout the day, Beaver Creek Reserve will have a naturalist table. Other booths will be manned by Mary Decker and Nobuko Fukuda with needle felting. Rolando Morales spices things up with his Rolo’s Hot Sauce. Christy Skuban is on hand to answer questions about the Venture & Voice Art Exhibit. She will also be vending her felted hats and jewelry.

Food. And did we mention food? Our ice cream parlor is open with a snack bar station and Jay Ray’s will have a festival menu of soup and sandwiches for purchase.
